Batteries: Alkaline, Rechargeable, Lithium, Which Will Work Best For My Head Torch?

If you are planning to do some night hiking or exploring once the sun has gone down and the moon has come up, you will no doubt need to make sure that you are able to see enough to avoid getting hurt. For just that reason, head torches are the perfect answer. Both lightweight and compact, with a head torch you will be able to have the benefit of a portable light that will keep your hands free while out on the trails after dusk. But because regulated head torches warn that they can only be outfitted with lithium or rechargeable batteries, you may wonder why it isn’t okay to simply pop in a few alkaline batteries instead. Is there really any risk or potential damage to the head torch if it was indeed supplied energy with alkaline batteries?

When it comes to batteries, the main differences between alkaline and lithium is what they are made out of. Both alkaline and lithium types of batteries can be used interchangeable for some items, but when it comes to head torches, this isn’t the case. Batteries that are a single use, or non-chargeable are generally the alkaline kind. Alkaline batteries are noted to last a long time and supply a lot of power for whatever they are supplying it to, but at the same time what they are made of is less than stellar. The chemicals in alkaline batteries are highly toxic, and if they are allowed to crack or aren’t taken care of in the correct manner after they are discarded, they can lead to a host of pollutant problems.

Another case against alkaline batteries, especially when they are being used in your head torch, is that they don’t handle the colder temperatures as well as rechargeable and lithium batteries do.  Their chemicals and make up won’t work ideally if the outside elements are too chilly, and being that you will most likely be using a head torch at night when the temperatures drop, this could pose a problem. If your alkaline batteries dies mid-hike, or if you are in the middle of an underground mine, you could be left less than ecstatic. For these reasons, it is always recommended that you choose to go with rechargeable or lithium batteries for any of your head torches. Not only will you be ensuring that you won’t be left with an extinguished bulb if it gets to be too cold outside, but with a rechargeable battery you can use it multiple times and save the costs of having to always buy replace alkaline batteries. So when you strap on the head torch, do yourself a favour and stick with rechargeable lithium batteries!
